Publications
The Young Explorers'
Trust in association with the Royal Geographical Society (with
IBG) has produced a number of publications to provide practical
help to expedition leaders planning a youth expedition.
All these publications below may be downloaded free and may be
reproduced without charge so long as the YET (and where appropriate
the RGS-IBG) is acknowledged.
Drawing on the experience
and hard-won knowledge of accomplished expedition leaders who
have collectively led hundreds of adventurous expeditions both
in Britain and overseas, these publications, in association with
the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), are a comprehensive
guide to the philosophy and the practical arrangements that should
underpin any safe and responsible youth expedition.
Written in association with the British Ecological Society, this publication highlights the issues that should be taken into consideration when planning and organising an expedition to assess the damage an expedition might do to the environment and the steps that should be taken to minimise such damage.
Intended
to complement other existing logbook schemes (such as the Mountain
Leader Logbook) the Expedition and Field Leader's Logbook was
developed by the YET and RGS (IBG) to provide a framework and
record for leaders wishing to develop their expedition leadership
skills through training and further relevant experience. The
Logbook also acts as a reference for leaders and organisations
wishing to assess the training and experience of the holder.
A resource book for leaders wanting to include fieldwork in their expedition
programme, this guide written by Mark Smith takes a fresh look at how field projects
can enhance the expedition experience, how some of the new technologies can be used for recording and mapping and how some traditional techniques are gaining a new relevance.
A useful guide to adventurous activities abroad for young people, with particular reference to BS8848 "Specification for the provision of fieldwork, expeditions and adventurous activities, outside the United Kingdom".
The articles which form this website are all written by able and
experienced leaders of youth expeditions, but represent their own personal views and not necessarily those of the Council
of The Young Explorers' Trust. The points made represent suggestions for consideration rather than direct advice, and the
responsibility for how these suggestions are used rests entirely with the users. No liability is accepted by the authors or
by The Young Explorers' Trust for any loss or damage arising from the contents of the website.
